About Location Science

Location Science is a software and data company, founded in 2024 in Jetzendorf in Upper Bavaria, between Munich, Ingolstadt and Augsburg.

We digitalise processes, build applications for web, desktop, iOS and Android, and introduce AI where it brings a benefit. Our speciality is places and geodata, and we have contributed to open map data for many years.

We believe technology should help people rather than distract them. So we prefer to build few things, and to build them carefully.

The founders

Three founders, engineers first. Our fields:

  • Geography and geoinformatics.
  • Cartography.
  • Information and communication technology.

We have worked in start-ups and in large companies, for public-safety organisations, in defence engineering, in global car navigation and in DevOps. The founders themselves sit at the table, from the first conversation to the handover.

Tobias Neumann

Managing partner

Studied geography (B.Sc.) and geoinformatics (M.Sc.) and has worked with spatial information ever since. Experience from equipping emergency control centres, developing air-defence systems and global car-navigation projects, including for TomTom. Most recently research on open geodata at a world-leading technology company. Builds and optimises spatial databases, geodata infrastructures and data compilers that turn raw data into deliverable map formats, as well as front ends for map display. A particular focus is proofs of concept that make new ideas quick to test, and agentic systems for autonomous operation.

Kangle Li, PhD

Founder

PhD in information and communication technology, with research focused on designing and implementing digital signal processing algorithms. Research at several universities, including Munich University of Applied Sciences (Hochschule München). In-depth expertise in pattern recognition, machine learning and deep learning, applied to object detection, classification and natural language processing. Builds applications on large language models end to end, from vector databases, frameworks and model APIs to deployment and fine-tuning. A particular focus is the control layer around the model that reduces hallucinations and keeps output quality reliable.

What we do

Digitalisation and application development. Manual workflows become software, which we accompany from the first conversation into operation.

AI adoption. We check where AI adds value, build it in there and measure the result. We comply with data protection law along the way.

Software engineering. Clean code, tests and documentation, so the software can be maintained for a long time.

Databases and data pipelines. Databases and automated data flows that run without manual work and tell us when a source changes shape.

Geodata, spatial intelligence and navigation. Coordinates become context, and positioning and routing run on the device.

Mobile engineering. Native apps for iOS and Android that also work offline. Location stays on the device.

Privacy and security. GDPR by design: we collect only what the product needs, and we write down how we handle it.

Consulting

We also advise, on digitalisation, software engineering, AI adoption and spatial data management. We help with the question of what you should build, what you should buy and how you should run it. The engineers who build our own products sit at the table. More on the pages for the public sector and for companies. Or write to us.

Open data

Knowledge should be freely accessible. We contribute to OpenStreetMap and other open map data, build on it and give back what we learn. Our sources page lists every source we use.

StoryMapp

Our own product is StoryMapp, with two p’s. The app shows stories about places, right where they happened. Museums, tourism boards, zoos and other organisations can publish their own tours.
